    Case Study #006: Failed Business Scam
    A client approached JMS Rogers to collect debt from a “failed business” that was run by him and his ex-business partner.

    Our client had entered into a business venture with a friend who dabbled in retail online sales. They had numerous internal business meetings and decided to invest the sum of SGD$50,000 each into the business for start-up costs, product acquisition, sales and marketing expenses and website development. Our client was told by the partner to make the transfer to a personal bank account held by the partner and once the company was set up, the funds will be transferred into the company bank account to a total sum of SGD$100,000 from both parties. The transfer was made and operations were to begin.

    Over the next few months, nothing transpired and when our client asked about the progress, the partner kept giving reasons as to why there was a delay. It ranged from website development delays, to not being able to source for good retail products. When our client asked about the SGD$50,000 he was continuously told that it was being used properly for business expenses and purchases to get the company moving.

    Eventually, after almost 8 months of no results, our client demanded to know where the money was, and wanted to exit the partnership. He asked the partner to show him the receipts for the costs incurred and the purchases made, and he would accept that as a business loss from the failed venture. Our client was also under the impression that there would be some money left from his SGD$50,000.

    To his dismay, the partner told him that there were no receipts as these were purchases and costs incurred from vendors that worked on cash term basis and no receipts were given. This immediately did not sound correct to our client and our client demanded to be shown proof or he wants his money back. The partner told him that it was not possible as there was no money left and this was a failed business venture. So both of them had to bear the losses. The partner even had proof in WhatsApp conversations that the money transferred by our client was for business expenses.

    Our client was devastated and had sleepless nights due to the loss, but always had the feeling that he was being cheated. It was then that he approached us.

    Through the course of our investigations and engagement with the partner as a debtor, we discovered that the partner had not used the money for business expenses, but rather for his personal expenses. There were no business expenses incurred at all. JMS Rogers then proceeded to demand payment for the fraudulent activity, and over the course of 3 months, the debt was cleared in full.

  • Whistleblowing Policy: The Federal Government states that it has successfully recovered more than 83 billion Naira, 609 million dollars, and 5.4 million Euros within a span of six years.

    President Tinubu to re-present bill to National Assembly

    The federal government announced that from 2017 to 2023, it was able to recover more than 83 billion naira, 609 million dollars, and 5.4 million euros in liquid assets.

    The statement also revealed that all recoveries have been deposited into the Federal Government of Nigeria's Assets Recovery Account, which is managed by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) and held at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    Yusuf Sule, the Director of the Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit (PICA) at the Ministry of Finance, shared this information yesterday in Abuja during a sensitization workshop titled “The Implementation of the Whistleblowing Policy in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges, and Way Forward.”

    He said, “Following a useful tip by a whistle-blower in 2017, EFCC raided and successfully recovered the sums of $ 43.5 million, 27,800 pounds, and N23.2 million in Lagos (Flat 7b, No 16, Osborne Towers) in 2017.

    “As proof of whistleblowing success story, which is attributable to the cooperation from patriotic members of the society who volunteered useful information, the earlier celebrated case of whistleblowing in Nigeria led to the recovery of the sums of N70,925,225,642.95, $9,777,439.99, and £21,500.00.”

    Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, emphasized that the Whistle-blowing Policy outlines explicit procedures for reporting financial misconduct.

    He said, “It clearly outlines how investigations should be handled such that the whistle-blower is protected and the accused is equally treated by the rule of law.

    “Permit me to state that it is our collective responsibility to create an environment where the Nigerian populace feels confident and protected in reporting unethical or illegal activities capable of jeopardising the overall development of the country.”

The school can break you academically but has the soothing balm for you just by the side. Whoever went to ABU and didn't take away the love side of nature can never appreciate love forever.

    In ABU zaria you find the most friendly camaraderie, in that place igbo language is most spoken than Hausa language, there you find the children of the rich reduced down to the level of the poor folks. No one ever carried an air of arrogance around him or her and ever lived to tell the story of nature's kindness. It was a meeting points of greatness.

    In ABU zaria, a mini Nigeria was created and a sustained veins of integration put in emotion. Regardless of your biases, people were hurled together in one room. In no time, you had no option but to live the lives of yourselves. Bonds were established and affinities became so stimulating. Everyone was for all as all was for one.

    Barriers were broken, prejudices abused. Intimate relationships built as people love for the sake of nature. Classes were attended together, discussions held into the nights. Life was sweet, the environment was a shelter for lovebirds.

    The last place to see exchange of fist was ABU zaria, you dare not cause a rift as everyone was a product of civility. At night, Ribadu garden, Sculpture garden, Archi rooftops, Sodom and Gomorrah, Mahdi followers, Gorilla gate, Drama village were embracing abodes for lovers. Life was lived in fullest. People enjoyed unhindered intimacy. You dare not violate the rules of engagement. No cases of harassment, rape and any other misnomer. Life in ABU was paradise on earth.

    You can't go to ABU and not have a friend. Friendship were cultivated and nurtured into lifetime homes. You either have an academic boyfriend or an emotional heartthrob. It was a beautiful experience. In Zaria, the only Aluta that supersede all other alutas was the emotional aluta. It was damn difficult to escape that- we are all product of emotional aluta.

    Yes ABU zaria was a hub of love, peace and harmony but this bond is abruptly truncated the very moment you enter the mosque and the church! At that point, we are opposite of the above virtues. And I then wonder, what has religion done to us as a people?

    Sound engineers had put 220 pounds of sound insulating material into the car, including inside window glass and in the tires. They'd also looked at things like the windshield wipers and air vents to eliminate even tiny noises that might not be consciously perceptible.

    The result was a strange and unnatural near-total silence. This also made other noises, someone else's breathing or pants shifting against leather seats, stand out even more.

    What was needed was a relaxing background sound. So the acoustic engineers worked on "harmonizing" various sounds in the car so they would combine into a continuous soft whisper. The seat frames, for example, naturally resonated along with the body of the car so dampers were added to adjust the level of that sound without entirely eliminating it. Also, a vent was added to the trunk, allowing some of the thrumming bass notes created there to escape while, again, not getting rid of it entirely.
