On Friday, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State revealed that the number of out-of-school children in his state has reduced by 300,000 since April 2024.

Governor Sani shared this information with reporters at the State House following his discussions with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

According to estimates from the Kaduna State Bureau of Statistics, there are approximately 768,739 children in the state who are not currently enrolled in basic education, covering grades Basic 1 through 9.

Sani mentioned that this figure has dropped by 300,000 as a result of prioritizing educational infrastructure.

He said, “I informed him (President Tinubu) that in the last six months, we have reduced the number of out-of-school children by about 300,000 because we built 62 secondary schools in Kaduna and 2,340 classrooms in primary schools; we have employed teachers.

“We have also been able to reconstruct, remodel, and equip about 12 secondary healthcare centres in Kaduna State.

“Yes, we embarked on a severe adjustment. We clarified that we need to reduce the cost of governance in Kaduna State. To date, we have not bought a single vehicle for any government official in Kaduna State.

“We’ve reduced the allowances of all our commissioners and advisers; even I have been receiving half of my salary since I became governor of Kaduna State, and I’ve not had a single new vehicle as governor.

“So we have tremendously reduced the cost of governance, and that’s the way to go if we want to address our problems and improve major areas such as education and healthcare infrastructure.”

The FG has granted approval for the distribution of one million science textbooks intended for secondary schools.

On Wednesday, the Federal Executive Council gave the green light for the printing of one million science textbooks to be distributed to every public secondary school across the country.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, informed reporters that the initiative aims to address gaps in essential subjects including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science.

This came after a memo was presented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, on behalf of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.

He clarified that the initiative aims to close the divide, empowering Nigeria to align its engineering and technology advancements with those of the global community.

He said, “We brought a memo on behalf of the PTDF that had initiated a program called the PTDF stem fund.

“Some time ago, the PTDF, which is the creation of law, you know, with the mandate to build the capacity, of Nigerians in the oil and gas industry came up with a program called PTDF Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Programme.

“They sought to obtain presidential approval. And today, we brought a memo to the council to be able to print 1 million science textbooks.

“The science courses that were identified that Nigerians have deficiency, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science.”

Lokpobiri said, “This program is meant to print 1 million science textbooks that will be distributed to all the local government, 74 local government areas in the country, and also to support the 104 unity schools that we have in the country, and then 122 special schools, that we have in the country.

“This memo was approved by Council. Essentially, this is a support at the secondary school level. To catch up with the rest of the world in terms of technological and engineering development, we need to lay a very solid foundation.

“Some time ago, we found that we are lagging, and so we decided that look, we are going to build both physical and digital libraries.”

The house Representatives are advocating for free Internet access for public schools, hospitals, federal, state, and local government offices, secondary and tertiary institutions, health centers in rural areas, police, Army, Navy, and Customs barracks, public parks, plazas, libraries and reading centers, public airports and seaports, and public transport terminals.

During its initial reading this week, a bill titled “An Act to establish the legal framework for a free internet access program in designated public areas across Nigeria and for other related purposes” was introduced. This legislation is sponsored by Mr. Abubakar Kusada, the representative for the Kankia/Ingawa/Kusada Federal Constituency in Katsina State.

Kusada stated that Nigeria acknowledges the crucial importance of information and communications technology in the process of nation-building. He underlined the commitment to fostering an environment that facilitates the development of infrastructures aimed at ensuring dependable and secure internet access is both available and accessible to all.

Sections of the bill states,“No fee shall be collected from users to connect on the public internet access points. The free internet service provided shall be separate from the internet service used for backend computer systems and programmes, databases, and/or management and information systems in government offices, provided that the shared use of infrastructure shall not be prohibited.”

“Technical solutions that may limit or restrict access shall only be employed where there is a clear and present technical risk or breach that cannot be remedied through ordinary technical solutions, provided that technical solutions that can likewise maintain or promote ease of access shall be prioritized and pursued.”

“NCC and NITDA shall be the lead implementing agencies that will oversee the effective and efficient implementation of this Act. Others include the Nigerian Satellite Communications Limited and the Nigerian Internet Group, an internet advocacy group.”

Atiku urges the National Assembly to consider a six-year presidential term.

Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, has written to the National Assembly. He is advocating for a constitutional amendment to establish a six-year single-term limit for both the President and state governors.

In a memorandum addressed to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, Atiku suggested the implementation of a rotational presidency between the Northern and Southern regions

Atiku called on the National Assembly to revise Section 135(2) to state: “amend Section 135(2) to read: ‘Subject to the provisions of subsection (1), the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of six years.”

Furthermore, he suggested replacing the term “substitution of an aspirant” in Section 285(14)(a) with “a voter.”

The former Vice President proposed that the minimum educational requirement for candidates seeking election should be the Ordinary National Diploma, rather than the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. He suggested amending Section 65(2)(a) to state: “He has been educated up to at least Ordinary National Diploma in any recognised academic institution.”

Additionally, he suggested adding a clause to Section 65(2)(a)(i) that would state: “Evidence of certificates of all educational qualifications of a candidate shall be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission or an affidavit by the candidate in the event of loss of his/her educational certificates, qualifications obtained, and dates, stating the schools attended.”

Atiku emphasized the need for political parties to have greater authority in the selection of candidates. He suggested modifying Section 65(2)(b) to state: “He is a member of a political party whose name is in the register to be made available by his political party to the Independent National Electoral Commission 30 days before the conduct of the political party’s primary and he is sponsored by that party.”

The Federal Government has allocated N47.5 billion for the initial phase of upgrading 50 chosen senior secondary schools nationwide.

Dr. Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), revealed this information during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Government Science Secondary School (GSSC) Koton Karfe, Kogi State on Wednesday.

He said, “This is just the first phase, when this phase is completed then we can then report to the President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Education and say we have finished completion of this phase.

“This will allow them to come and complete this project and we will move unto the next phase.

“So those schools that are not going to benefit from the first phase, I want them to be patient because after the first phase we will come to them.

“The intervention for the first phase will cover about 47.5billiin for the 50 schools,’

President Bola Tinubu concluded his official activities in China on Friday in Beijing by engaging with the Nigerian community residing there. He characterized his visit as "very good and successful."

The president said, "What is uppermost in my mind is for you to continue representing Nigeria as good citizens, and I urge you all to be good ambassadors of our nation in China.

"We will always celebrate our diversity. We cherish it, but this diversity is our commitment to serve. If it is about service, we must be good citizens,"

"I cannot tell you more, except from the embassy, that China is a very disciplined society and we have to be disciplined too. Without discipline and commitment, we cannot build a nation that is respected everywhere in the world.

"We must exploit our diversity and be ready to do everything required of us within the laws of the communities that we live in and reflect a good image of our country,"

The President noted that while it is not always easy for a leader to have a national consensus on issues, he is ready to take the hard decisions to move the nation forward.
