The GCEO of NNPCL, Mele kyari highlighted that Nigeria currently lacks energy security. He pointed out that half of the population remains without access to electricity, and 70 percent do not have access to clean fuel.

He said, “Today, when we say energy security, the thing that comes quickly to people’s mind is the availability of PMS, I think energy security is not about PMS. It’s beyond this. As a country today, we all know that over 50 per cent of our population doesn’t have access to electricity. Over 70 per cent of our population doesn’t have access to clean, good fuel. This is very true, all of us have said it over and over in the last three to five years.

“Have we taken any specific steps to close that gap in terms of having access to electricity and also access to clean fuel? I believe that substantial work has been done. And without mincing words, NNPC is left with the cross and we are humbly carrying it, proudly carrying it as NNPC Limited.”

Kyari emphasized that the oil and gas sector was never designed with the intention of prioritizing energy supply to the domestic market, stating that this was not its foundational purpose.

He added, “Every investor here, and of course the landscape is changing, don’t mind the fact that things are changing, but every investor here is here to produce oil or gas, export and make money. This is the reality. We as NNPC are left with the cross of making sure that this is made domestically available. That speaks to the availability of products for processing in the domestic market, provision of finished products in the domestic market, and also delivering gas into the domestic market.”

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has made a commitment to restore electricity to Northern Nigeria within the next three days.

On Tuesday, Adelabu shared this information in response to inquiries from senators concerning the power outages impacting the region and the ongoing incidents of grid failures throughout the nation.

He said, “Power will be restored to the North in two to three days. We will use the Ugwuaji-Makurdi transmission line for temporary purpose.

“We are working with security agencies to access the grid currently occupied by vandals.

“I assure you that within the next 14 days, the repairs will be completed, and power will be fully restored to the North.”

The power minister said that although customers were expressing dissatisfaction with the Band A tariff, they understood that it remained a more economical option compared to producing their own electricity using petrol and diesel.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has indicated that it could cost private companies as much as N750 to produce one kilowatt-hour of electricity due to the elevated price of petrol.

Adelabu stated that the expense of generating power will amount to N950 for each kilowatt-hour for those utilizing diesel engines.

He contended that these costs exceed the N209 per kilowatt-hour that Band A customers are currently paying.

He said, “I need to correct an impression. There’s a section of the media that says this revenue is an additional burden on the consumers. No, it is not. It is just a mere reallocation of resources from what they used to spend on petrol and diesel. Now they are paying to enjoy a good power supply.

“But today that we have a more stable supply than we used to have, a lot of people do not spend on fuel again, not on diesel, not on petrol. Now, we are charging N209 as a full cost-reflective tariff for Band A, but for you to generate a kilowatt hour of power using a petrol generator to pay, at this rate of N1,000 per litre, it is going to be about N750 for a kilowatt-hour; and for diesel, it remains about N915.

“So, power sector consumers are like a beautiful bride that has now tried two matrimonies. If they want to be sincere, they know which of the husbands to remain with.

“So, we are adopting commercialisation in the sector to enable investors to have a line of sight to the return of their investments.”

On Wednesday, the minister made this announcement during the launch of Hexing Livoltek, a company specializing in the manufacturing of electricity meters, located in the Lekki region of Lagos State.

Adelabu highlighted that grid failures are nearly unavoidable in Nigeria due to the poor condition of the nation’s power infrastructure.

He emphasized that establishing several power grids across different regions and states would promote greater stability.

He said, “This Electricity Act has decentralised power. It has enabled all the subnational governments, the state government and the local government, to be able to participate in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. We all rely on a single national grid today; if there is a disturbance of the national grid, it affects all 36 states. It shouldn’t be like that. This will enable us to start moving gradually towards having regional groups and possibly having state grids.

“And each of these grids will be removed and shielded from each other. So, if there’s a problem with a particular grid, only the state where it belongs will be affected, not the entire nation. So, this is one of the impacts this Electricity Act will have.

“We keep talking about grid collapse. Grid collapse, grid collapse, whether it’s a total collapse, partial collapse, or slight trip-off. This is almost inevitable as it is today, given the state of our power infrastructure, the infrastructure is in deplorable conditions, so why won’t you have trip-offs? Why won’t you have collapses, either total or partial? It will continue to remain like this until we can overhaul the entire infrastructure. What we do now is to make sure that we manage it.

“In the last four months, we have not heard of any grid collapse, except two days ago when we had a partial collapse that didn’t even last two hours. So, what we work on now is how to improve our response time, to bring it up each time it collapses. There are transformers of 60 years old, and 50 years old, and you’re expecting them to perform at the optimal rate. It is not possible. That is why we need a lot of investments in this infrastructure to bring them up to speed, to bring them up to the state that can give us a grid that will not collapse again.”

The Sokoto State Government has revealed 55 percent reduction in the prices of rice and other essential goods that have been sourced for the community.

During the inauguration of the state and local government monitoring teams for the subsidized sale of food items on Monday, Governor Ahmed Aliyu made this announcement.

Aliyu explained that this gesture is intended to alleviate the impact of the present difficulties caused by the elimination of the fuel subsidy in the nation.

He clarified that the food provisions were intended to support every household in all 244 wards throughout the state.

He warned,“Avoid any political, ethnic or religious consideration while discharging your assignment. Make sure every family has free access to these items because it is meant for every resident of this state.

“We are all aware that since the inception of the present political dispensation, several economic upsets were witnessed nationally and internationally owing to the changing pattern of global economic indices and contraction of fortunes of the global finances.

“However, certain national reform policies initiated by the Federal Government to redirect the economic and social fortunes of the country for future growth and development could not pacify the situation in the country. Policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy, electricity tariffs and others, subjected our people to varying economic hardships and numerous tests of livelihood.

“We are all living witness to the fact that numerous efforts in the form of Palliatives were initiated and executed by both the Federal and State Governments to cushion the effect of the hardship.

“Considering the social indices of our state and certain peculiarities, the state government extended various palliatives of different commodities to all corners and cronies of the state free of charge and procured mass transit vehicles whose services were subsidised to ease transportation difficulties of our people within the state and beyond.

“In this new approach, the state government procured food items and other essential commodities meant to be sold at a 55% discounted rate to enable families to access the commodities for the well-being of their members.

“The state government is committed to sustaining the supply of the commodities to all the 244 wards in the state with guaranteed access to all families irrespective of any social differences and/or political affiliations. I would like to assure all that the initiative will be sustained until when the economic situation improves in the country.”

The Federal Government has granted a 50% electricity subsidy for public hospitals.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, has shared that the Federal Government has approved a 50% subsidy on electricity for public hospitals nationwide.

He stated that this initiative is intended to minimize operating expenses for public hospitals and lessen the burden on patients.

He said, “We are going to change the names of our Federal Hospitals to Specialist Hospitals to expand care delivery and destigmatize hospitals so that everybody can come here. While the core services will remain psychiatric, this re-naming will allow for the continuous expansion of services,”

“We know they are development institutions, they are social institutions. But inside the health and educational institutions, private businesses are hiding under them. These people charge their customers commercially and they expect to be subsidised because they are located within the territories of these institutions.

“We said no, go and do a proper search and meter everybody. For the ones that are properly health and education-related, we are ready to subsidise them, even if they are on Band A. We are compiling our data, DisCos will collect a certain amount and the government will pay the balance. But we must get the data right so that we are not subsidising a private business that is charging its customers commercially. That will be an abnormal profit and it is unfair,”
