A winged bull "Lamasu" was found in Khorsabad in Nineveh, northern Iraq.

The joint Iraqi-French mission found the body of the winged bull “Lamasu” at the Dorsharukin “Khorsibad” archaeological site in Nineveh, which was the capital of the Assyrian king Sargon II. The winged bull (Shido Lamassu) was discovered in the 1990s, but some tried to steal it by cutting off the head and smuggling it out of Iraq.

The head was then sent to the Iraqi Museum, and the head was restored and is displayed in the Assyrian Hall. As for the body, it remained in an unknown location, until it was discovered today by the French mission.

The mission said in a statement that the discovered statue is 3 meters tall, weighs 10 tons, and is made of white limestone.She added that the statue was located in the area of ​​the main door of the royal palace in Khorsabad, which was the seat of Assyrian rule in the seventh century BC.

The mission explained that the statue was in a good state of preservation, as it retained its original colors.
