Yoga is not only a physical practice but also a profound system for mental, emotional, and spiritual purification. Among its many tools, kriyas stand out as a set of yogic cleansing techniques that aim to detoxify the body and mind. The Sanskrit word kriya means "action" or "effort," and in the yogic tradition, it refers to specific practices meant to purify internal systems and prepare the practitioner for higher states of awareness.

There are several types of kriyas in yoga, each with its unique purpose and method. These kriyas are especially emphasized in Hatha Yoga and Kundalini Yoga, where purification is seen as essential for awakening the body's latent energy and achieving deeper meditative states.

The Six Main Kriyas (Shatkarma or Shatkriya)

In classical Hatha Yoga, the kriyas are traditionally grouped into six main categories, collectively known as the Shatkarma. Each of these focuses on a different area of the body:

  1. Neti (Nasal Cleansing)
Neti is a method for cleaning the nasal passages. The most well-known form is Jala Neti, where warm saline water is poured through one nostril and allowed to flow out of the other. This practice helps in relieving sinus congestion, allergies, and respiratory issues.

  2. Dhauti (Digestive Tract Cleansing)
Dhauti involves cleansing the digestive tract to remove excess mucus and toxins. Variations include Vamana Dhauti (vomiting cleansing) and Vastra Dhauti (swallowing a cloth). These techniques require proper guidance and are best learned under the supervision of a qualified teacher.

  3. Basti (Colon Cleansing)
Similar in concept to an enema, Basti purifies the colon. This kriya helps improve digestion and promotes detoxification. While ancient yogis performed this using natural techniques, today’s practitioners often use water enemas to achieve similar results.

  4. Nauli (Abdominal Massage and Churning)
Nauli involves a dynamic churning motion of the abdominal muscles. It massages the internal organs, strengthens the core, and stimulates digestion. Mastering Nauli takes time and patience but offers powerful benefits.

  5. Kapalabhati (Skull-Shining Breath)
Often mistaken as just a pranayama, Kapalabhati is also classified as a kriya. It consists of forceful exhalations that cleanse the lungs and energize the brain. It’s known to improve focus and eliminate sluggishness.

  6. Trataka (Concentrated Gazing)
Trataka involves fixing the gaze on a single point, such as a candle flame. This kriya sharpens concentration, soothes the eyes, and prepares the mind for meditation by reducing mental distractions.

Kriyas in Kundalini Yoga

In Kundalini Yoga, kriyas are structured sequences of postures, breathwork, mantra, and meditation. These kriyas are designed to activate the chakras, awaken dormant energy (kundalini), and bring balance to the nervous and glandular systems. Unlike the Shatkarmas of Hatha Yoga, Kundalini kriyas are often energetic and emotionally transformative, targeting the body, mind, and spirit as a whole.

Some popular Kundalini kriyas include:

  • Kriya for Elevation

  • Kriya for Balancing the Aura

  • Kriya to Release Fear

  • Nabhi Kriya (for core strength and digestion)

Each of these kriyas has a specific intention and produces distinct effects depending on how consistently and mindfully they are practiced.

Why Practice Kriyas?

Practicing the different types of kriyas in yoga can lead to profound changes in health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. These practices remove toxins, clear energetic blockages, and help align the practitioner with their higher self. However, because some kriyas are intense and require proper technique, it's essential to learn them from an experienced teacher to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Whether you're looking to boost your physical vitality, calm your mind, or deepen your spiritual practice, understanding and exploring the various types of kriyas in yoga can be a transformative journey. With dedication and guidance, kriyas can become a powerful part of your yoga lifestyle, supporting a cleaner body, a clearer mind, and a more awakened spirit.
