  • PROVOST COMMISSIONS ANOTHER NEW CBT CENTER

The Provost of Federal College of Education, Zaria, Dr. Suleiman Balarabe, has officially commissioned a newly completed, cutting-edge CBT Center in the College. This facility boasts a capacity of 408 seats, designed to provide students with world-class resources and enhance their learning experience.

During the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Suleiman Balarabe emphasized the importance of embracing the digital age, which he believes is the future of teacher-education. This manifests in the recently assented Federal Colleges of Education Establishment Act (2024), which propagates the integration of technology into the education system. He stressed the need for teachers to guide students in accessing knowledge, rather than being the sole possessors of knowledge, to build a brighter future for the younger generations.

Dr. Matemilola Peter, Dean of Undergraduate Studies (ABU Affl.), expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that the college would have achieved greater advancements if such facilities had been established decades ago. He offered prayers for the college's continued progress and prosperity.

Arc. Hassan Buba, Director of Works, highlighted the numerous projects completed and ongoing since Dr. Suleiman Balarabe's tenure, including:

    - 2 completed and 1 ongoing CBT centers
    - Total ICT
    - TETFund Center of Excellence
    - Former Mopol block
    - New Maths Block
    - F Block
    - Theatre
    - Many other projects, demonstrating the college's commitment to digitalizing academic activities.

The Bursar, (Dr) Muhammad Sani Uwaisu, commended the Provost, noting that if the college had such structures 10-20 years ago, it would have been better than its current state.

The Contractor, Bldr. Usman of NURUUN ALA-NUR INVESTMENT LTD, commended the college's supportive staff for their invaluable recommendations and support during the project.

Present at the occasion were Management Team, Deans, Directors, Heads of Units, Union leaders, students and staff.

  • Sen. Karimiw has stated that the National Assembly will pass legislation to ensure that INEC is responsible for conducting elections for local governments.

Senator Sunday Karimi, (APC) from Kogi West and chairman of the senate Services Committee, has stated that the National Assembly plans to shift the responsibility of managing elections at the local council level from state electoral bodies to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the near future.

He said, “I thank Mr President for mustering the courage to do the right thing. Since 1999, the third tier of government literally speaking, has been nonexistent. State governments treated them as appendages of the state governments. No President, has been able to change that. But, within one year, however, President Tinubu has returned the local government to the owners-the masses.

“Local governments, if well operated, will ensure a better existence for our people. President Tinubu took due cognizance of this and courageously took the bull by the horn.

“Some state governors will fight back. President Tinubu allowed the judiciary a free hand to operate in this particular instance, irrespective of the fact that he is but a first term President who may desire a comeback in 2027.”

“I align myself with the President on this. It takes a man of the people, it takes a man of courage, it takes a man that knows and feels the pulse of the masses to make this to happen.

“He has seen it all, as a former Senator and a former Governor. Former President Buhari promised to push this but lacked the presence of mind and political will to pursue it. It will not stop there.

“The National Assembly through our oversight responsibility will ensure that revenue from the federal purse goes to where it is supposed to go. We will ensure that the Supreme Court judgment is obeyed to the letter, that allocation is shared between the three tiers of government in accordance with the law.”

“will ensure that capable individuals can step forward to contest local government elections. Experienced people will be needed to manage the funds effectively, and prioritize the development of the grassroots for the masses to become actively involved in shaping the future of their local governments.

“A lot of money that has gone to the local governments, over the years were either taken over by the state governments through the joint account or not accounted for. “Prosperity will remember President Tinubu for this epoch making achievement, his second term is assured.”

Decscribing Qingdao as the China's powerhouse in shipbuilding and construction, the Deputy also recalled Nigeria's diplomatic ties the Republic, saying that both countries have collaborated well on issues of mutual benefits.

"We can join forces to build the infrastructure Nigeria needs to thrive. From top-notch home appliances to reliable tires and delectable processed foods, Qingdao's manufacturing muscle presents a wealth of opportunities. Imagine factories humming in Nigeria, producing these goods or even becoming export hubs to the rest of Africa.

"We are committed to taking our economic and social ties to the next level. That means fostering deeper cooperation in trade, vocational training, and cultural exchange.

"I would like to express our gratitude to the Ndigboamaka Progressives Market Association for their crucial role in making this meeting possible.

"The House of Representatives remains committed to providing a conducive legislative environment that supports our joint initiatives and encourages the growth and prosperity of both our nations.

"We will use legislative interventions, look at the laws again a see how we will structure it to make you comfortable to invest in this country.

"This is to say that the House of Representatives is eager to involve in a meaningful discussion with Chingdao Congress as part of our engagement towards actualizing our agenda which has to do with encouraging investment in the country.

"While welcoming you and appreciating the value that you are going to bring to the country, you have to be conscious of global best practices in line with our labour laws.

"We have observed that some of the companies that are working in Nigeria are not complying with our labour laws, this is with regards to taking care of those working for them.

"It’s important to comply with the labour laws. As we have more companies coming to Nigeria, we are strict with compliance with our laws."

Earlier in his presentation, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Qingdao Municipal People's Congress, Wang Luming said they came to synergize with the Nigerian government in areas of technology, vocational education and talent training to ultimately to solve the problem of unemployment in the country.

  • We’ll Remove All Obstacles Hindering MSMEs Growth – SMEDAN

Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Charles Odii, says the agency is determined to remove all obstacles that are militating against the growth of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria.

He stated this following a meeting with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the presidential villa in Abuja, where he discussed the agency’s ‘GROW Nigerian’ strategy designed to offer SMEs essential guidance, resources, opportunities, and workforce support to thrive, a statement by the agency on Friday said.

“SMEs are central to the president’s mission to eradicate poverty and ensure prosperity reaches all corners of Nigeria. His commitment was evident as we discussed SMEDAN’s GROW Nigerian strategy, which includes plans to create an enabling environment for over 40 million small businesses, collectively providing over 60 million jobs. We are not only going to protect them from inflationary pressures but also empower them to drive down such trends.” Odii said

Speaking further, he added, “We will work with sister government agencies to streamline regulations and optimize them for growth and productivity. We will remove obstacles that hinder formalization and growth.”

“With the strategy, SMEs will get affordable financing opportunities, access to lucrative domestic and international markets, tailored mentorship, and support to compete through capacity building for improved production standards.” the SMEDAN DG further explained.

  • SMEDAN directs N5bn loan applicants to submit CAC certificate

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria has reviewed the selection process of beneficiaries for a N5bn credit facility allotted meant for small businesses in the country.

With the new procedure, the agency has mandated the submission of Corporate Affairs Commission certificate and Tax Identification Number as a compulsory requirement to obtain the loan.

The Head of Corporate Affairs, Moshood Lawal, made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with our correspondent on Wednesday in Abuja.

The PUNCH reports that last year, SMEDAN signed an agreement with Sterling Bank to disburse loan options ranging from N250,000 to N2,500,000 at a single-digit interest rate of nine per cent, facilitating the growth of small businesses through enhanced financial access. The credit with the target to assist over 10,000 Small and Medium Enterprises has a duration period of 12 months, enabling small businesses to leverage the facility fully.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the SMEDAN DG, Charles Odii, described it as “an important milestone in our efforts to stimulate economic growth and drive prosperity by enhancing SME access to finance. We believe that the financial support, which comes at a very competitive rate, will help SMEs expand operations, hire additional employees, and contribute to an overall upswing in beneficial trade and economic activities.”

But giving an update on the issue four months after, the spokesperson said a software application had been developed to smoothen the process and limit human interference on the credibility of the process.

He added that submission of CAC certificate and tax identification number was needed to identify fake applicants and ensure the funds is given to the right persons.
