Rabies Antiserum and the Disease

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system in humans and other mammals. It is caused by the rabies virus in the family Rhabdoviridae. The virus is mainly transmitted through the bites of rabid animals and exposure to their saliva or spinal fluid. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. The initial symptoms can include fever, pain, and paraesthesia at the site of exposure followed by neurological symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, paralysis, and hydrophobia. Without post-exposure prophylaxis, rabies is virtually 100% fatal in humans once clinical signs occur.
